How to Choose a Caterer

Deciding on a caterer for your event is the foundation for success or failure. Price is always a factor in making a decision, but should not be the deciding factor. Listening is a first step in finding a good caterer, ask friends, business associates and look on line for reviews. No matter how much advertising a company does it will never be able to overcome the spoken word by prior clients. To be fair, do get several sources of reviews such as The Knot or Wedding wire.

Ask your catering candidate about their years in the business or experience, find out if the front of the house staff i.e. bartenders and serving staff are temps or employees. If they provide a wedding consultant or an event planner, find out their experience, more importantly are they happy, enthusiastic, creative and knowledgeable.

Education, ask if your Chef is Serve Safe Certified, this is a special certification given after testing by the Board of Health to ensure proper food handling and care. For Bartending services make sure they are insured and be very clear on what you do and don’t want served.

After you’ve done your homework, find out about tastings. Tastings give you an opportunity to see the presentation of the food; this will allow you to understand the presentation and quality of the food. In some cases you may not get to taste your exact menu, but a tasting isn’t really for that. It gives you a chance to experience what the cater can provide and how they handle the tasting.

Proposals, ask for a proposal for your event, this will allow you to see all charges. Find out deposit amounts and payment plans. Also, ask about a planning meeting to go over the final details.

Take a little time to do your homework and you’ll end up with a wonderful event.
